My honest review as a female gamer, having finished both this game and it's predecessor:
SPOILER WARNING:
The trailers leading up to this game's release really made us believe this would be a continuation of Joel and Ellie's story, which got most people excited in the first place. This ended up being false.
I can accept a new protagonist, but she wasn't even remotely as interesting a character (nor her supporting cast) to justify the replacement of Joel. I can see that the idea of this new narrative was to see both sides of the story (her's and Ellie's), but her side of the story just wasn't compelling at all, despite having come in with an open mind about it. I was so bored in the second half of the game.
For a story driven game, it did not deliver. I will say the environments and traversing through each was a joy to experience as well as the few flashbacks with Joel, but that's really it. The creators really underestimated our love for Joel and how much more relatable and interesting of a character he was compared to anyone else in this game.
All in all, I wanted to really like this game but was very disappointed in the end.
