Easy 5 stars from me.
Halo Combat Evolved absorbed HOURS of my life playing through it alone. I didn't have system link, so it was very much a solo affair (unless a few mates came round for a split screen session!).
I distinctly remember how expansive it felt, and the feeling of freedom as I was able to go full on with a scorpion, or pick Elites off from a distance with the sniper rifle.
Part of me was expecting to be slightly disappointed when I heard rumours it was a return to form on the original...
Halo Infinite exeeded all of my expectations. It genuinely did take me back 20 years. I couldn't help but smile at the thought of what a 16 year old me would have thought if I'd somehow glimpsed what the game I loved so much would eventually become!
Everything about this game has clearly been vigorously tweaked to give you the best experience possible. The story, the weapons, the vehicles, the enemy AI and the friendly AI were all top notch. Chief actually runs and moves like the super soldier he is supposed to be.
New touches like the grapplehook and drop shield felt completely at home and added new layers to the gameplay.
As always, the music score was astonishing; cutting in at just the right time either to pre-empt an imminent skirmish, or adding to the atmosphere of what was happening in the moment.
Love, love, LOVE this game. I feel genuinely guilty that I've technically got this for "free" as part of my game pass subscription!
