There are reviews saying this show was disappointing and/or not what they were hoping for. I watched this new take on the show before I read any reviews and, of course, had already seen the original anime before as well. I genuinely liked this version. While it’s not told the same exact way as the original, I think that’s one of the reasons I truly enjoyed it. There are references to the original such as quotes and scenes, but it still manages to keep itself a retelling of one of my favorite shows I’d watch as a kid.
The cast is phenomenal, and the cinematography compliments it all. Spike is still that badass bounty hunter played by John Cho, Mustafa Shakir is great as Jet Black, and Daniella Pineda was amazing at recreating Faye Valentine. One thing that really caught my eye, besides the perfect cast, was the subtle blue coloration in a lot of the shots that really made it feel like a Cowboy Bebop world.
There are some things that didn’t exactly sit well with me. One example is that the humor would tend to fall flat on its face.
I know there are a lot of instances of imperfection in the show. However, I watched it with an open mind, not knowing what to expect and I enjoyed it immensely.
