First of all, I love the Cuphead video game. If you just put this on for your child and wonder why it has “the devil” in it even though it is TV-Y7, Cuphead is a game about two boys, Cuphead and Mugman, making a deal with the devil himself. They lose and are told to give him their souls, but they make a compromise and promise to bring him all off the soul contracts from his past “costumers”.
Cuphead is known for two things.
One: the old-timey graphics. The games design for the characters, setting, and story are based off of shows from the early 20s-50s. Many characters are based off of characters from old shows like original Mickey Mouse, Popeye, Betty Boop, and more. It even has the old fizzy static things on the screen (sorry I don’t know what it’s called). Most of the game is designed with hand-drawing. It took a very long time to complete, but in my opinion, it’s worth it!
Two: it’s difficulty. No joke, Cuphead is one of the hardest games I’ve ever played. I haven’t even beaten the main story yet! I just got by Inkwelle Isle I! Some people even use cheats to get to the end of the game. But I think the difficulty gives the game personality, and definitely good for speed-runs!
Now to the actual show itself.
Cuphead was announced in 2020, and released on February 18, 2022.
Voice Acting: I’m not gonna lie, the voice acting is some of the best choices I’ve ever seen. They all put so much effort into their characters! I think no other person could match the incredibleness of the voices of the Cuphead Show characters.
Dialouge: the dialogue is straight to the point, the episodes go by fast and have high energy, but the characters still manage to talk in a way that makes the show great!
Animation: The Cuphead Show has and old-timey charm in its animation, but still manages to actually give it a hint of modern day. It’s not Spiderverse animation (nothing can really beat that), but it’s still very impressive!
Writing: The Cuphead Show only has 15 minutes to get the point of each episode across. I do think they do a good job fitting so much in such a short amount of time. But I’m not impressed with one episode in particular, “Handle With Care”. The plot of this episode is that Mugman’s handle accidentally falls of when him and Cuphead are having a pillow fight. They try their best to put it back on, but nothing works. I thought this could genuinely be a good spin for the episode, but then Elder Kettle (the caretaker of the two boys) tells Mugman about the “Handle Fairy”. It’s basically The Cuphead Show’s version of the classic “Tooth Fairy”. I’m not gonna explain to you what the Tooth Fairy is. You’re old enough. But I think this inclusion of this Handle Fairy really rushes the episode, and just feels like a dumb way for kids to relate to the show. BTW, I’m pretty sure Elder Kettle just glued the handles back on Mugman and Cuphead (who broke his handle for the Handle Fairy.
Overall, I think this show can be entertaining for both kids and adults! It’s funny, the pace is quick, the animation is good, and the voice acting is phenomenal! I think it fits best with fans of the game because they can see all the hidden Easter eggs that relate back to the game. I’m proud to give this show a whopping five stars!
