I did not have super high expectations for this movie. Of course, I was excited, since I loved the first movie, but it did seem a bit cliche.
And it was, at times. But it was also a whole lot better than I expected. Many movies with a premise like this tend to shame the internet constantly, but this movie didn’t really do that. While it did have moments where we were warned of the dangers online, the internet was mostly portrayed as a useful resource, and a fun one, too. I thought that was refreshing.
I also really liked the other messages present. Ralph and Vanallope have an adorable friendship, and that’s expressed well. It shows that friends can have different goals and opinions, and they don’t have to be together constantly. It shows that change can be a positive thing. And when Ralph began acting clingy towards Vanallope, it was portrayed as an overwhelmingly negative thing. They talked it out, and he realized that how he acted was wrong.
I feel like the way that the internet was made into this world was really neat. It felt very tangible, but still maintained the image of a place that people from all over the world are able to access. How real people were shown as these cutesy avatars, pop up ads were annoying and getting into your face, and web services had a very familiar feel to them. It was pretty great worldbuilding.
Overall, I liked it a lot. I’ll give it a 8/10, since it often seemed a bit unorganized, like they were trying to cram too many ideas into this movie. I do not think that Wreck-it-Ralph needs a third movie, though.
But there was a Stan Lee cameo, so !!!
