Spoilers ahead:
James Wan’s worst horror film. Wow what a waste of two hours, where to begin? Characters were so heavily reliant on tropes that there were parts when I literally questioned whether the whole thing was satire. Female protagonist is defined by her multiple miscarriages (its 2021, please stop with the lazy writing of female characters I am begging you), husband is an abusive P.O.S. (which is made clear to us immediately and is genuinely his only character trait in the entire minute and a half of his screen time). Hunky police detective with a sassy black detective partner/sidekick whose main role is to function as comic relief (really? We’re still doing this??). No character development whatsoever. Maddy literally watched her parasitic twin go on a murder rampage killing dozens of cops (tangent: how did this happen without ONE SINGLE COP SHOOTING THEM!!) and only snapped out of it and took control of her body when she realized that Gabriel was the reason she miscarried??? What in the world.
Also so many elements made no sense: who was Maddy seeing the first night when Gabriel killed her husband? She wasn't paralyzed so we know that it wasn’t Gabriel just playing tricks on her. Also how did he attack Maddy that night? And why is he evil? Are we to believe that he actually is the Devil? There was literally no other religious elements to this movie other than her calling him the Devil a few times so I wouldn’t think this is the case. Whats with the electricity control thing? He’s literally a tumor, I don’t understand how this works. And my final most PRESSING question of all, what makes Maddy so freaking valuable that no one has killed her yet?! She is the host to a mass murderer and has been killing since childhood, at some point the ends justify the means, no?? Kill her and we solve the entire problem.
This is a side note and not really that important to most people but I thought I’d mention it, if bad wigs really bug you during a movie then that will be the nail in the coffin of you hating this whole experience. I could not stop looking at Maddy’s wig from start to finish and wondering who in the makeup dept okayed that. I get that when she has Gabriel on her that her prosthetic probably alters her head, makes the wig look weird, I get that. But in every scene it is painfully obvious that its a really bad wig and I really had an awful time focusing on anything but that.
Not even scary, just so disappointing. Don’t think I’ve yelled at a screen that much in a long time.
This is my first ever Google review and I hope that shows you how strongly I feel about this movie; please don’t waste your time.
