Sadly, this show just doesn't sit well with me anymore. I enjoyed it mostly during it's run and honestly with most shows I generally get pretty invested, however, I don't intend to watch it again. There are so many things that make it uncomfortable to watch. I know obviously the characters aren't a reflection of the actions of the actors who portray them but it is hard to watch any scenes with Mark Salling in them, given what he did.
The sadness of seeing scenes with Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera just make it very heartbreaking to watch back, how tragic to know those talented actors will never entertain us or be with their loved ones again. I get it, death is apart of life, but sadly the years since this show ended have not been kind to it, or the cast either. In just a few short years, Glee is becoming as uncomfortable to watch as Friends is which had a lot longer to mature before the sheer awkwardness was made so glaringly obvious.
The show itself, the actors were/are clearly talented but that's where the enjoyment ends, Glee became less about opening yourself up to joy and preaching genuine acceptance and more about making sure to cover the top 40 of the year before the season is over. It seemed after the first two seasons, the writers/creators didn't know what they wanted to do with it. That was before Cory died.
Honestly it appears to be a trend with Ryan Murphy shows, himself, Brennan and Falchuk seem to get bored with their awesome show ideas within the first 1-3 seasons, as a result the quality fades away as they put their sights on the next big idea too many irons in the fire, if you know what I mean.
so it's awesome that Murphy has been sticking with limited series and film in the last while with Hollywood, The Politician, Normal Heart, and Boys in the Band, I think Murphy has found his niche with the limited series and films.
Glee I am sure is still highly entertaining to many many people and that's awesome, but in hindsight, my personal enjoyment has ended... there are some song covers I love still but a lot make it hard to listen to either out of discomfort based on who is singing because of one actor's actions in real life, or just sadness at the loss of who is singing.
I hope that lots of people be they lifelong Glee fans or newbies to the choir room continue and discover respectively their love of this iconic, show. That's one thing I can't argue with, it was and is still iconic for what it set out to do, what in some ways it did accomplish and what it meant for TV and many people at the time.
