Nothing more than a melodramatic 'family drama', in making of which Bollywood(read KJ) is an expert.I would have been happy to put a "zero star" on this. Filled with regressive thoughts(patriarchy,orthodox traditionalism,chewing on so called 'values' instead of exploring life or trying to find its meaning)time to time, this is more a 3 hrs show of celebration,luxury and entertainment than having a content.In a word, enough 'spicy to attract the mass,but completely unhealthy for a thinking viewer.' Regarding Rotten Tomato, I dont know what the system is to rate movies here.This site cares to give this movie a rating of 100%, but seems to never hear of 'Hirak Rajar Deshe' or any movies of Mrinal Sen.Legendary Ray's works (at least some) even have got <100% rating by this site.

There are lot of sports movies out there. This movie stands tall courtesy to its unique storytelling style, a smart screenplay, avoidance of unnecessary melodrama even while focusing on the class-difference issues and socioeconomic contrast on the backdrop and the necessary emotion for a sports movie is also subtle yet strong enough to make the catch line "fight Koni fight" very popular in every Bengali household.

One of the best movies ever made in Bengali language .A family movie-a movie made for family, on a family representing almost every family of urban Bengal in mid 20th century, when the ultraleftist movement is yet to tear through bengali society. Officially though never spoken,but unofficially it can be the first of Tapan Sinha's 'Calcutta trilogy'(the other two being 'Aponjon' & 'Ekhoni'. Keep aside the unique storyline and mesmerizing background music-trademarks of Tapanbabu's movies,one must watch this movie to get spellbound by the natural acting by every actors(male & female),a total perfect screenplay and a subtle supernatural & philosophical theme incorporated into it. Speaking about the 'movies on Calcutta' in that era,out of all 9(by respectable Mrinal Sen,Satyajit Ray & Tapan Sinha)this is the only one with comical and philosophical touch,thus making it a unique among the particular genre.
