OK. So this movie didn't have the greatest budget. It didn't get the press that so many movies about World War I have gotten. It still has plenty to recommend it, and it's worth a watch. Although an important war, this is a war that is often forgotten in history now. This is a story worth telling.
First of all, some of the actors in the movie are actually serving members of our military. They used members of the National Guard in the cast.
It's also a great story. It's a buddy story, about trying to save those who matter the most in battle, the ones standing next to you. It's a story of sacrifice and giving your all even when others may not care, or don't see the objective as worth fighting for. 350,000 African Americans served in World War I, and this is one of their many stories.
I think an effort was made to make sure the uniforms and details of the story were accurate. Those involved were also war reenactors so they had some sense of what the times were like for these soldiers.
Shout out to the cast. You made me care, and you made me cry. War is a tough proposition, and it really is hard to portray on screen. What this movie demonstrates well to me is that it is ultimately the people involved who make the difference. This is not so much a story about war as it is about giving your all to save the one next to you.
Again, worth a watch, and a story worth telling.
