Drakan is an underrated action RPG based adventure that uniquely allows level progression through the allotted use of a scaled fork-tongued dragon beast, Arok. After bonding player to "Altered Beast" (anyone who has played the original will understand this reference) in the game intro, the game engine allows for some very open-ended game play tactics to be used in a sandbox style hack and slash approach. Playing as the character Rynn, you traverse multiple styles of weathered terrain in a very battle-heartened fashion that is classic of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Game of Thrones, and Lord of the Rings. There are some very creative creature designs in the game, although when wandering on foot one can become stuck in between clusters of trees, particularly when facing "goliath Golam" monsters that shoot freaking laser beams from their eyes. You can singe your enemy into a thousand piles of ashes and shrapnels of sinew or you can gouch your enemies mindlessly with the blood thirsty steel of Iron Man. The player is able to choose from over 50 different weapons that can be upgraded at different blacksmithing shops. In addition, there is also a nifty "magic" system that allows carnage to those who wish to dispel of their enemies from a distance, as well as the use of a bows and arrows. Occasionally within secretly guarded caves and ruins lie enchanted weapons of fire, ice, and lightning powers. Who doesn't want to be like Merlin the magnificent? X Play gives this game a 5 out of 5. Drakan on until early sunrise...
