Butter Cup

We all know someone who is obsessed with her or his job-career or a personal interest. Others do not seem to be important to a self-absorbed person. The goal is not money, although it would appear so. It is about ego and saturating the brain with that feel-good sensation. It's almost like self-flagellation, when a person can be at peace only after a vigorous effort - such as exercise - a type of fight or flight response, to survive some perceived challenge or to attain a goal which provides temporary contentment. Self-reflection is rare in these people because they have cultivated few deep and lasting relationships; they may seem aloof or depressed but actually cannot handle closeness. Remaining at a distance is their go-to refuge. Babies can develop this tendency into childhood and later in life if they are left alone by the parent.

This is a friendly review! Why do I call it friendly: each time I watch it - every year or so - it is like visiting with a dear friend. We share laughs, tears, and a warm hug...until next time we visit. A great film!

After several viewings of La Brea, my conclusions: First view, was not convinced and disappointed - one star; Second view, appreciated better the story when I turned on the closed caption dialogue - two stars; Third view, appreciated even more but concluded that the writing tried to cram a lot into one hour for this pilot episode...too much air time on commercials, seriously disjointed the story...too much reliance upon the computerized special effects...not enough in developing the characters - three stars, maximum for this attempt. We loved our visit to the real La Brea Tar Pits and wanted to love this series but...
