Of course a movie made in 2015 with one of the more recent, jarringly harrow and frightening narratives about a war stricken, atomic age US, in which we remind ourselves how young our wars are, and how fresh racism is yet, couldn’t possibly be in any way applauded by mainstream Critics in the country the film is set. It is 2015, and Mexico gains another win! Let the US whine about it, Monteverde has created a fresh, wonderfully emotional story. I dislike cheese in film, I promise I have yet to take the time to write a review here on google, and my preference are for directors like Leone, Scorcese, Aster, Herzog, Kubrick, Almodóvar, etc... but shoot, I like a feel good film when it is right and fresh. This film, like so many, is too good for rotten tomatoes. I’m surprised and then not that this film didn’t get more hype.
It is also not faith based.
It tackles some heavy subjects and pushes you to take coincidence and turn it into a little kid who makes it magic, even if we all know the truth behind it, this film reminds us that it still fun to make believe.
