I was not aware of this being a book adaption until recently (I am aware that this is terrible), that being said this is a show only review. I think it was excellent and a definite must watch.
The first episode did not grip me, I wasn’t particularly too attached to any character, I wasn’t a huge fan of the main character, and I didn’t particularly enjoy the scene of Yossarian flying and showing what it was like to be in a WW2 bomber squad that was being targeted by anti aircraft weaponry.
I didn’t enjoy it because I instead empathized with the main character. I felt like I was in that plane with hundreds of anti air craft shells exploding all around me and my peers. Any one of which could mean death for me or someone I know. It was very realistic, for the first time I really understood why some veterans are so terrified of the sounds of fireworks. I was very sad at the end of the episode when he couldn’t get out of flying due to his catch-22 situation. And I felt bad for all soldiers and people around the world risking their life for someone else’s cause and being unable to leave or get out of danger.
So I didn’t enjoy the first episode because it made me sad, it made me feel real emotion. I didn’t watch the next episode immediately. I watched the next episode, and then I couldn’t help but watch the rest as I fell into the world of this small air base and the life of John Yossarian. This show made me belly laugh several times throughout the 6 episodes. And at one pivotal scene, before John Yossarian coming out of a plane naked and screaming. I found myself in genuine tears. Watch this show if you are able to immerse yourself in good television. And you enjoy riding emotional roller coasters.
Tl;dr The previous two sentences.
