Some reviewers say that this movie focuses on klan leader much more than on the female African American leader. I agree. However, the audience sees more of a change in him than in the female lead. She was on the right track at the beginning of the movie, whereas the Klan leader was a sorry sight. What’s more, it’s the white audience which most needs to change its racist attitudes. Thus when we see how white characters change themselves. If they see changes in people who look like them, they will subconsciously be inclined to see how they too can change. Nevertheless, both characters did become better listeners to each other, realizing that as poor people they had more in common than they had ever realized. We white people need changing, and this movie helps us. Plus, we see the importance of two races coming together to make decisions that affect their lives through charettes, a process still going on in other communities today. This film could be used as a training film for organizers and social change activists.
