If you grew up watching Fairy Tale theater or were captivated by the film The Shining or Popeye then you probably know Shelley Duvall is in this film. I know there are other actors who worked very hard but let's face it she's the main talking point. If you want to maintain your memory of Shelley as the sparkly eyed reed thin enchantress who informed your childhood-don't watch this movie.
There's nothing wrong with getting older but there's something nefarious about this that feels almost exploitative. These are my impressions. Do we really need to see her on the toilet? Do we need to see her in a dilapidated bed and obvious poor health? Do we need extreme close-ups? It was obvious she was hurting. Something about this doesn't sit right with me. It sort of reminds me of those 1960s hagsploitation movies, were a former beautiful ethereal actress is turned into an aged out deranged shrieking wretch.
She dosent deserve that.
Shelley's final cinematic appearance should have had some dignity. She had put in years and years of hard work and created iconic characters. This just felt grotesque. Definitely below her.
As for the plot I wasn't exactly enthralled.
I'm interested in Shelley, and I feel she was done a disservice
I don't feel the director had her best interests at heart. He feels off.
I saw some interview on YouTube where he said he considered "Shelley a friend" and he was "so sad that she had passed away." I'm dubious.. It reeked of insincerity.
It seems to me he's just milking her final appearance for all it's worth.
I've already forgotten the film.
In the most linear sense it's just forgettable.
However I won't forget Shelley Duvall.
An icon who deserved to go out with some cinematic dignity.
RIP Shelley Alexis Duvall
