Ripley[2024] on Netflix is so unique and universal at the same time,it can easily surpass the time and space boundaries. But any unorthodox presentation like this, draws a certain risk,a risk of misevaluation by contemporary audience. As we know ,only one of Van Gogh's painting was sold in his life time. Ok,Back to Ripley. This thriller touches a raw nerve because of its monochrome world...the only color was in Lucio's bloodred paws on the stairs. And Caravaggio.Thomas Ripley literally worships him and tries to find a strange way of justification of his crimes by comparing himself with Caravaggio...but still,we can notice the post-murder righteous anger on Caravaggio's face and the satanic pleasure in Ripley's smile.
As for the performance, Moriarty is being Moriarty. Andrew Scott's the best one ,although all of the characters, including even Hotel managers were just made for the show. The only character that seemed one dimensional, to me,is Dickie.Merge is quite good, but Freddie Miles and Ravini are fabulous.
The symbolism in this series deserve a special appreciation. The stairs, both in Atrani and Roma, suggest the dramatic rise and fall in Ripley's life and position. The water,in Ripley's shower,in Atrani and Venice ,everywhere suggest a monstrous guilt eager to show up. And blood...The series used blood like a paint on a canvas, smooth as well as slippery. That murder weapon-ashtray and the use of light and Italian music, sculpture and language, and finally the Picasso painting, its wild and creepy strokes...the more I say about it,the more it demands saying. I'll finish this review with: there's just no other show on Netflix like Ripley [2024] ,and it violently deserves a season 2🙂
