(for quick summary and conclusion go to last paragraph)
As a student studying and having to analyse this book for higher english in my final year. It pains me having to study and be forced to read this book in order to complete my final exams as i'll have to write an essay about it. I understand the view of the book and empathise with it and i get how Christopher has autism. However it is written so poorly. Within the first 10 pages i found myself falling asleep and closing the book, rather listening to the audiobook that was playing in class. Even stil the book in itself, i'm sure it made me lose braincells.
The character is the byproduct of blended stereotypes of people with Autism, but put into a teen white boy growing up in England with the interests in space and math. Great diversity and way of spreading awareness there aint it (sarcasm). Another point is that the book is written terribly. At first i believed this book would revolve around the dog that Christopher found at the beginning of the book. However the book spirals out into this cluster mess of him yapping and blabbering on about science and math which has nothing to do with the story. Without this unnecessary additions, i guarantee the book would be at max 40 pages long.
Christopher himself is also an emotionless, cold, narcissist who cannot grasp any concepts and believes that he can't be wrong and blames others. He constantly mentions how smart he is, disregards his parents failing marriage, is unable to understand the effort that his father is putting in to care for him. After he finds out that his mother is still alive and living in London and that His dad killed wellington, The climax of the story becomes Christopher's trip to find his mother in London, leaving his dad who raised and looked after him over a dog. That also was a borderline psycopathic thing that his father did.
All the adults within this book are heavily unlikeable and terrible. His dad is a borderline psycopath for going on a fit of rage to kill a dog and telling Christopher that his mother is dead, his mother leaving him with no warning whatsoever, the other adults being so uncaring about the dog being found dead with a pitchfork sticking out of it, and Siobhan being no help at all to Christopher.
The whole time i was cringing or begging myself to close the book. On his trip to find his mum, he pulls his swiss army knife on random bystanders and starts screaming for the slightest reasons. He becomes a danger to himself and the people around him, as well by following and chasing down his pet rat on the train tracks in the tube. I thought by the end of the book he would learn some things and become a better person, but nothing happens. I feel my braincells dissipating as i write this, hence why this review is all over the place.
If i could, i would give this book a 0 star. I wish i was never forced to read this book because then I would have all my braincells still intact. Once again I understand the basis for this book to raise awareness, however it does the opposite by feeding into already established stereotypes instead of raising awareness. They create the most basic character with the most hateable personality and most blatantly stereotypical interests and they give it countless awards for raising awareness. This is a terrible representation of people with Autism, and people who do have Autism also agree with this view as seen through the reviews for this book.
