I researched the French Revolution for my history paper and I am a great fan of Napoleon. However, I couldn't understand Napoleon's character in this movie. 🤣 When it comes to performers who play well-known characters, Joacquin falls far short. He has a variety of options for interpreting this character as a shrewd strategist, lecherous womaniser, generous stepfather, charismatic leader, French emperor and clever tactician. However, I believed that his performance did not accurately portray Napoleon's traits. In fact, he gives me the impression that he looked so stressed to represent the character but he has no clue what he is doing.🙄 In the entire 2 hours of movie, I noticed "Joacquin the actor" is wearing the costume of a French soldier and not embodying the soul of Napoleon.😅 I begin to wonder if he even did proper research and read Napoleon memoir before taking on this role. 🫣 At least, Russell Crowe did a great job as Captain Jack in Master and Commander and Maximus in Gladiator. I am sad to compare Joacquin who did a brilliant job as a Joker but he lacked sincerity in this film. Mr. Ridley, why on earth did you choose Joacquin when he did such a poor job? 🥲I recommend future audience to skip this movie.
Just a minor comparison, I personally think you are better off watching "Alexander: The Making of a God" from Netflix. Despite being an unknown actor, the actor is fantastic in this documentary and it is so inspiring that I want to visit Egypt one day to see the any Roman ruins related to him. I am hopeful that someone can portray a better Napoleon in the future and I wish Netflix can do a documentary about this famous French leader. 🙂 Netflix might do a better job.
