I think a lot of the "boring" comments were expecting Adam Driver to be like doom guy slaying realistic dinosaurs in the most gruesome fashion. Also looking at it at face value isn't a good idea, even if it presents itself as a face value movie.
It's a movie thats a combination of 2 things from the way I see it. A combination of survival-thriller and coping with inner demons.(it's obviously other things too)
I'm only reducing a star as this isn't that much of an original idea and isn't something that hasn't been explored before. Didn't have too much more to show than the trailers did except a crucial plot point of the story. Obviously has it's flaws that don't make it a top tier movie.
SPOILERS
I don't think people realised that for Mills(the protagonist) the planet was acting like a manifestation of his inner demons. It isn't a coincidence that he crashed onto the planet while it was dark, or that he was in darkness again when he lost Koa, it was showing when he was at his lowest. This isn't to say the depth of this movie is very deep, but they are examples of things to be appreciated.
Also you've got to appreciate the scenery, not the best cinematography i've seen but some shots, even the fully CG rendered ones were beautiful.
I'm not at all surprised that most of the high rated reviews have been from people who went to watch it with their families, it's a very family centered movie, even if it's presented in a non-family concept, given sci-fi dinos are in the movie and it's not a literal representation of daily life.
