I didn't love nor hate this film. I think "Get Out" was beyond brilliant and "Us" really dug into Peele's nouveau Hitchcock-style. I came into this film really wanting to love it and I made the mistake of thinking it was going to have the same level of social commentary disguised in a clever horror flick like the other two films. I was extremely disappointed. For me, the story lines didn't stick together. Character development was really weak, if not terrible. I was especially annoyed by Keke's character -- this over the top, doesn't follow the rules little sister that they just threw in a quick hint that she might be a lesbian (which did nothing for her character btw) and for whom I wasn't sure what her motive or deeper back story was about. The chimpanzee! I don't to throw in spoilers, but how did that add to the storyline? On the car ride home and over dinner, we tried our hardest to connect scenes and makes sense of them, but in the end, we landed flat. I'll watch it again and see what I missed, but I don't think great cinema should do that. I shouldn't walk away like huh? I read the 5-star posts and folks say it's great but aren't going into detail as to why they think it's great. I don't want to hate on a Jordan Peele movie because I love the guy, but this was not it. It was entertaining, strange, and even reimagined what an extraterrestrial could look like, behave like, and even redefined a UFO -- but that was not enough. Maybe I'll magically see all the symbolism and connections when I watch it again, but for now this is just an ok movie in my book. If you haven't watched it yet, I suggest going in with lower expectations and perhaps you'll think it's incredible.
