While reading, I found myself flicking through the pages trying to connect with the content then going back and rereading in an effort to feel the stories, the connect with the times, to acknowledge the harsh difficulties. Despite my best efforts, I found this to be a very superficial and sanitised account of what was a horrific period in history. It tells the story of very brave people, of sisterhood, people who survived with endurance, compassion and an indomitable spirit, admirable human qualities throughout. This book, though, failed to convey, to this reader, any depth in the stark reality of those times.
The story of these women tell something of the dreadful hardships endured however I found the book to be disappointing.
