Campy..... The Menu is an exaggerated experience both for the viewer as well as the guest characters. The plot is guests arrive to an exclusive island for a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience; little did they know their lives were at “steak”.
SPOILERS ANEAD:
Anyway, the movie was sold as a “thriller”. I absolutely found it to be a comedy. It was one of those stories where you are convinced, little by little, (much like the characters), that things are not all that bad. The sous chef blew his brains out! Have a seat, it’s part of tonight’s menu....
“You’re all going to die tonight”, “No problem, more wine?”
A hilarious and campy analysis of the saying, EAT THE RICH. Between Instagram, Yelp, food critics, social media, virality and what’s trending, The Menu does a great job at showing us that when obsessed, things can go too far, and then after that, even farther. Tyler’s character is the influencer who doesn’t know jack about cooking or culinary arts yet is trying to hard to blog his experience and impress the chef. Food critic also is OBSESSED with the “experience” and loves the theatrics! It’s like a look in the mirror and I think it’s hilarious. You’re either Lillian Bloom or Morgan Mills. You either are obsessed with the melting sea water adding saltiness to the raw scallop, or you’re still starving - get me a burger. Either way it’s definitely worth a watch but I wouldn’t categorize it as a thriller or horror movie by any means. It’s satire.
