TL/DR:
The pilot episode is the most melodramatic and daytime 'soapy" but if you can get past that to appreciate the premise of a drama centered on Black professionals engaged in political machinations cross-cut with romantic entanglements set against the backdrop of the metro-Atlanta area then this is the show for you.
Extended:
The show so far is very much a mixed bag. It seems the writers are coming from a Soap Opera background and that's heavily influenced their stylistic decisions as well as major plot elements. As others have mentioned, and I now have come to believe, Robin Givens is the worst part of the show. Her consistent overacting makes it seem that she isn't simply typecast but rather can't act & is always playing herself to varying degrees. Nonetheless, her character, Stephanie Carlisle, is the pivotal personality in the story since her actions and decisions tend to drive the plot forward. This dynamic has the potential to make her character the most interesting to watch if Ms. Givens and the creative team can figure out how to transition the character from a bratty rich girl to ruthless manipulator. I believe such a feat would actually elevate the show from a simple soap to a serious evening drama. That's my impression as of the first four episodes. If you enjoyed The Haves & The Have Nots, If Loving You Is Wrong, and similar series; then it's likely you'll enjoy this show as well.
