Captivating story, but the laziness of the production is shameful. Impoverished George is on the road hitchhiking with nothing but a backpack, yet when he arrives in the city he has a different nice suit, dress shirt and tie to wear every day. He gets a low-level factory job (to which he wears a suit) and in no time at all he's driving a car. Invited to a fancy party, he shows up in a tuxedo (OK I guess he could have rented that). These things put me off the movie right up front. Surely when a studio acquires rights to a great book they could use a little common sense when setting up the story.
