Like most fans of the first Inside Out movie, I was particularly excited to see this sequel. It was the only movie that I had decided to see in the movie theater this year. So I went to a matinee show during the summertime with an audience full of kids and was expecting to laugh and be entertained. I am a 46-year-old male and have enjoyed previous animated films with underlining tones and adult humor. This lacked both adult and kid humor. I believe there was one laugh out loud moment, but noticed that the audience was not laughing at anything. The plot was too bland and perhaps too serious for a family movie. I found myself closing my eyes out of boredom, waiting for a punchline, and then leventually waiting for the movie to end. As the plot came to a weakening end, I was surprised to find myself emotional in the last five minutes in a tender moment about growing up and belonging in this world. Then the movie ended. I walked out completely disappointed and felt like I wasted my time. If I had watched this movie at home, I would not have made it for more than 20 minutes before stopping it or watching something else.
In contrast, I just watched the new Garfield movie and was completely surprised how good it was! It had humor and wit, laugh out loud moments, and it had a lot of heart. There were four emotional moments that touched on the heartstrings and I felt myself totally drawn into the father-son dynamic between Garfield and his father. I was very moved by those moments, thanks in part to the sappy music that was played in the background during these emotional moments! Haha but this movie, definitely appeals to both adults and kids and can be enjoyed by all. I can’t say the same for the sequel of Inside Out. So if you are reading this, and you are indecisive about what to watch with your family, definitely pick the new Garfield movie, not Inside Out 2.
