If you've read Ebert's review (whom I respect tremendously), he has it Almost perfect. 30+ years later he has NO objection to the violence in Tarantino's movies like Kill Bill 1 and 2, etc. If you remove Ebert's objections to the violence in The Yakuza... I believe it would Absolutely have been a 5 star review.
His description of Mitchem's acting, the wide range of emotions he's called upon, and the emotional depth of the plot itself.... This is a complex movie, executed superbly. The director Sidney Pollock pulled off a masterpiece; all the separate parts, the diverse p p plot, the violence, the emotions of all the actors, ALL SUPERB !
