I’m a Beetlejuice fanatic. I was 7 when the first one came out and it’s one of my favorite movies of all time . I was so utterly excited to see the sequel but sadly I was greatly disappointed. I enjoyed it for the nostalgia and to see Beetlejuice, Lydia and Delia together again. Also the small homages to the original that only real fans will get - realtor, Delia’s hat, and more… Don’t get me wrong Jenna was amazing but Wilem and Monica’s character didn’t bring much to the film or plot and Wilem bored me to be real. I loved many aspects but was disappointed by the musical number. They tried to make it as iconic as the first films musical sequence and it fell very flat. It also went on way too long. There was also SO much happening. So many story lines and plots but nothing that really captured your interest fully. Also Tim Burton has been criticized for not having Black characters - which I agree is ridiculous on his part - and so there is a musical scene where it felt like pure tokenization to shut people up and made my family and I cringe (we are a Black family). Nothing can beat the original - which I watch every few months so no it’s not cause I was a kid ;) Did I enjoy it? Sure. But I could have waited till it was on streaming rather than pay $60 in tickets :( So enjoy but don’t expect it to really fill that Beetlejuice void.
