This is an anti-Mormon book disguised as a new history. All new history means is they wrote re-wrote it in anyway they cared to - ignoring what people said or did or wrote at the time. The material was taken from people who hated Joseph Smith, and the Church of Jesus Christ and eventually killed him. They made up every sort of wild story about Joseph and the church to further their cause. Much like haters do to people today.
