At times intense, but always real. I read the book in 2018 and felt strongly that I understood and lived parts of JD Vances’s story. Critics that have spurned the movie perhaps are unfamiliar with these situations and how many people have a story is that is similar. I guess some of the Hollywood types these days aren’t into stories of redemption unless it’s people of color, but as a parent of African American children, I can tell you that redemption is needed many times in our lives, and when it is needed, it doesn’t matter what color one is. It’s just needed. Thank you JD, for an honest look at one families flight from poverty to what was supposed to be wealth, but real life got ugly quick. That redemption at the end is indeed sweet, even though the time it took to get there was hard to bear.
