I just tried to watch the first episode after hearing how amazing this series has been over the past few years. I couldn't get through the first 3 minutes without the wish to turn it off but forced myself to watch another 7 minutes, thinking it was going to get better. It was god awful. It's not entertaining to watch a bunch of narcissistic, self-absorbed, insensitive, ungrateful, entitled, snarky, corny, manipulative, greedy, unkind, cruel, megalomaniacal, self-important, stiff, overly cerebral, soulless, deceitful, self-loathing, disconnected from the majority of humanity, supremacist, aligned with patriarchy (both male and female) characters complaining about their lives or strategizing about how to make more money or take over yet another corporation. This show is exactly what's wrong with our world. Because people like these characters are in control of our institutions. It is even more telling that this has been one of the most popular shows. Like attracts like and the show is a reflection of so many people in this country. The characters are all re-enacting old hurts and trauma and are all vying to defend their insecure egos. Underlying all their shenanigans is a fear of not being in control. They also seem to have very little to no self-awareness. This is not entertainment. It is a mirror of what's wrong with this country and it is deeply tragic. We need to be burning sage and teaching the value of generosity, compassion and therapy. You know what show would have been more interesting to me? Seeing each one of these characters in psychotherapy facing their inner demons instead of projecting them out into the world. To all those who think this is the best show ever, I challenge you to turn inward to examine the ways you are unkind, emotionally avoidant, cruel, deceitful, self-hating, ashamed, greedy, controlling, bitter, disconnected, judgmental, vengeful etc., and then do the courageous work of healing your wounded parts. It will do wonders for making our world a safer and kinder place to inhabit. Let's not reify and glamorize sociopathy, which one of the characters mentioned within the first few minutes of the first episode.
On top of all this, the show, at least the first few minutes, was poorly acted...like the actors were performing instead of truly embodying their characters.
