Across the Debuff takes a bit getting used to. I wouldn't compare it to Darkest Dungeon other than the fact you have a party. It's far more in-line with a Slay The Spire in gameplay and feel.
GAMES/TURNS ARE VERY LONG
A single run of Across The Obelisk takes well over an hour, and I usually take a break during the run.
Think of Slay The Spire, but you have 4 people to control in a turn, versus up to 4 enemies....And then instead of each enemy playing only 1 card each turn, they end up each playing like 3-4 cards. You're literally going from 4 enemy moves to up to 16. This adds up with animations and even on 'fast mode' runs can take hours with 'great' wins.
It seems strange that the game would be this long because of how much focus there is on 'losing and then doing better the next run'. (You unlock a LOT of cards, pets, and perk points that you can spec into to get permanent bonuses)
If you are patient with it, and take the time to learn all the debuffs, and accept that you'll never play another game as good as Slay The Spire, you'll have a lot of fun with this game. Just don't get blown away by the fact there's like 60 different status effects. lol
Some debuffs are just completely worthless to use, which you'll ironically 'see', but other than that the game really is a case of the devs just dumping all of their ideas and passion into an incredibly thought out game.
The graphics remind me of that old browser game Adventure Quest, too. lol
Anyway, yeah. I know I said a lot of things that seem bad about it, but it's still an amazing game.
TLDR:
•Not much like Darkest Dungeon other than party config/size
•If you like Slay the Spire, you'll like this.
•Just because you like Slay the Spire, don't expect this game to be like Slay the Spire
•Each run is extremely long (once you get to the later acts)
•Very clear passion project; the amount of work/thought ideas that went into the game would be absent in a game that would be abandoned
•The game has a giant focus on trial and error, with each run being better than the last.
•Has its flaws and quirks, but it's still a 4.5/5
•Really wish it was on mobile, too
