I recommend screening any movie your children watch. That being said, I thought this movie was so cute. I was so much like mei mei in school, I love her and wish that there were movies like this when I was younger.
Don't watch this if
-you don't feel ready to have honest discussions with your children about something they will experience when they are a preteen (some are saying this is not appropriate for under 15? Seriously? ) I think a lot of this part will be over young kids heads anyway or can be easily explained away to the youngest viewers.
-you hate the 2000s, anime, boy bands, Canada, and furries/people wearing ears and tails.
I am sure these 2 points will cover a bunch of people though. The young girls are silly and maybe vapid to adults but the whole wanting to see a concert and fibbing to get there is kinda classic.
The only thing that is a little blah is the whole "I'm Chinese and I'm a temple cleaner/tour guide" idea. Not terrible cause I love temples and theirs is beautiful, they have a right to be proud of it-- but I feel like it is still stereotyping, in a movie that is trying to break away from norms. You can argue yourself in a circle on that point.
My kids liked it, I loved it and would watch it again.
