IT SUCKED! keep reading trust me..
So I didn't know this movie existed yet alone was out this year, never watched a trailer nor read a review. Pretty much the opposite of what I normally do.
So without any prejudgement here's my honest opinion ... Its gonna be rough my dudes *deep breath*
Before you keep reading, you must know this is MY opinion, you chose to read it. Disagreeing doesn't make me nor you wrong.
ENJOY!
The movie starts out in a village in India, children meditating with a white woman leading the session, pretty much every pixie cut sub 5'4" white girl's dream. You can tell that she down with spirituality, bindi and all. She needs to go to New York to resolve some financial issues the orphanage she's running has.
The expositional part of the movie starts, she meets up with the donor she gets invited to her daughters wedding bluh bluh bluh the newly married girl is her biological daughter *GASP!* She is infuriated at her father because he pinky promised her that the daughter will be up for adoption then she disappeared.
NOW! I understand that she is allowed to do what she wants, she saw she wasn't fit to raise a baby so she gave her up, even though an abortion would have saved the baby from a life of neglect or love WHO KNOWS! but that's my opinion. ANYWAY! the father goes back to take the girl named after a grace period because thats when he decided he wanted her back. As much as I am a believer for free will in terms of the mother's choice the father also has a choice and he made it which is to keep the product of an unwanted pregnancy that is HIS DAUGHTER.
Yada yada yada the step mom is dying and as a desperate attempt to save her two young boys from growing up without mother, because as we all know a feminine side in a parental role is essential for the development of two co-existing twins. She tries to buy them a mother aka the protagonist of the story.
Michelle Williams took portraying the awkward spiritual middle aged woman to a science, you can tell she is all pretentious with a superiority complex even though you can see she has absolutely no control over her emotions to the point you're afraid she might do something she'll regret, like taking off her bindi... actually she does that but has to keep the scarf on and the shoes off cause thats what normal people do.
Billy Crudup, oh Billy, the artist that does the handyman's job while snooping around in his wife's closet like a creep. Its true spouses are not supposed to keep secrets but like that was a bit much, yes you found out she is dying but like really? Also, he portrayed a conflicted person perfectly. But the character was too 2D for him to do anything, Dr. Manhattan levels on non-dimensional.
Julianne Moore, a producer, over AND under acted her way through the movie. The mother that will do anything to insure a safe life for her children yet still choose to spend most of her time away from them.
After all is said and done, Im not rewatching this movie nor am I going to recommend it to anyone. It will live a long and happy life at the bottom of a streaming service or in the discounted bin at Walmart.
