Lara's fantasy world keeps you involved throughout the book as most chapters have cliffhangers at the end. The Door of Colours is a good book to spark joy and imagination for anyone, regardless of age. There are characters in this book that remind us of all the people we have met in this world. I believe that many younger readers will also be able to easily identify with Sophie (the main character in this book), especially with her initial feelings of isolation and not belonging as she goes through an amazing journey in the colorful world of Akvarell, a truly magical place. M. C. Lara has managed to infuse this book with a lovely wit and charm that will both amuse and delight adults and teens. This author has built a strong and multi-layered world with large amounts of details that don't feel tedious or self-indulgent. All the characters, good guys and bad guys alike have truly believable personalities, eccentricities and flaws, which, more often than not, helps to make them truly lovable. The story builds towards an exciting "to be continued" end of the first book that has the ultimate feel-good factor. This book is highly recommended to anybody who wants to be introduced to this magical world for the first time, to strange wonders never yet experienced.
