Killer was well done, but absolutely nothing about it was surprising, interesting, or spectacular in any way. As a Fincher fan, this movie had none of the unique qualities or gripping dialogue that made movies like Fight Club and Seven amazing. The main character's inner dialogue feels like listening to a film student's writing since he shows zero weakness or complexity - a true element of humanity. If you watched a few episodes of Dexter, you've already heard it before. Unlike other Fincher characters like Edward Norton's or Kevin Spacey's, The Killer wasn't engaging or intriguing unless you really like listening to the inner dialogue of a calculating unstoppable robot that doesn't 'get' humans. This might have been the film's strongest point, if it didn't feel so incredible deliberate and cliche. What stood out to me every moment of the film was that I was never given any motivation to care what was happening or take any interest in the characters. I was never driven to take any more interest than 'watching things happen'. If you enjoyed film school art project movies like Driver and Pig, you'll likely adore The Killer.
