This is one of my favorite movies from long ago. There is a lot covered in this movie as to motivations and why people do what they do. Alfred/David’s character was so mistreated by his father as he was being raised. He was clearly not the favorite son. So he did everything he could do to impress his father and make him proud. Serving as an officer in the Navy in World War II was not even enough to impress his father. And his father was presumptuous enough to just assume that Alfred was going to take over the family business. But Alfred had other ideas and in the pursuit of his success overshadow his father’s successes he made a lot of decisions That affected his personal relationship with his wife. That was the way it was back then. I really liked the depictions of the parties, I love the fashions and I love the melodrama. Paul Newman and Joan Woodward are spectacular in this movie when they like each other and even when they don’t. Ina Balin was excellent too. I’m hard-pressed to figure out why Rotten Tomatoes gives it a three as an average. I clearly love it way more than that. I have my own copy of it on DVD and watch it every couple of years or so. And I like it every single time I do.
