Great book. this is a jewel that describes the human suffering in the context of struggle of ordinary people with institutional/bureaucratic power. Once upon a time American literature was on top level: Steinbeck, Dreiser, Twain, Thoreau, Faulkner, Hemingway. Very far from it now in terms of the depth of narration.
