A couple of hundred pages in, you don't recall that this was written in the 1770s. It is neither an easy read nor impossible. It is not romantic in the least.
There are few of us left on the planet with the will and the ability to seriously read and use history to guide us through the future. If one thinks that they are experiencing something unique, they are perhaps innocent but certainly foolish. When one doubts that they can gain from history (experience of others) they are past hope.
