I wanted to love this book, I really did. When I first started reading, I noticed lines that were manic pixie dream girl type of stuff, and a lot of “I’m not like other girls.” Which to me at least, is super frustrating, and turned me off from the get-go.The biggest flaw this book had, though, was the ways in which it talked about mental health. I understand this book is probably attempting to humanize those struggling with mental health issues, however, I felt the book was romanticizing the hell out of Theodore. In a way that almost seems…exploitive. Not to mention, there was never a full discussion about what Theodore was going through. The only part of the book I liked was when Mr. Embryo finally said the word bipolar. I feel as though this book tried to grapple a serious topic but only explained it in cliché YA jargon and tired poetic attempts. But to anyone who may be reading this, definitely try and read it for yourself!
