The long and short of it is its a show/series that doesn't know what it wants to be. The creator tried to do too much, reaulting in weak story telling, a confusing viewer experience, and an incredibly dissatisfying ending.
I wanted to like it. I did. The creators' historical work alone drew me in. The art style was appealing. The premise? Done a few times, but with some unique elements that seemed to warrant a watch... but the plot?.... Yikes.
With so many major plot-shifting points 'falling into place' *Completely* implausibly (seriously, how many times did I say "Why the F** did that happen? That makes No Sense!"), sexualization of children by multiple characters, the overly trope-ish insane girl turned on by violence.. (twice... yes two of them), and an ending that manages to both too-cleanly settle the least important things and resolves none of the moment's most intense questions... it was a wild and often frustrating ride.
Given how many abrupt about-faces the show does, it feels like this was a compliation of 6 or 7 poorly fleshed out ideas, smashed into one specifically to pump out more content.
I think (and im giving Ample undue credit here) the author Intended the ending to be dissatisfying because the perspectives shown vary widely, and its kind of a commentary on life, and the human perspective as it relates to religion and morals. People's real opinions are just as varied, and none of us know with certainty what comes after death (if anything). But I feel like the way things end, while trying to portray that, lost a lot of impact by failing to settle into any particular theme or idea concretely. Again, maybe what the author was going for, but as a consumer of the story, it's generally frustrating.
Would I reccomend this show to anyone, having finished it? No, and I sincerely hope the creators make a return to the more well developed content they previously created.
