The CGI was cool and much better than the movie attempt. Casting was decent too, finding people who looked the part pretty close to the animated series. Although, I’m not sure if it was actors just never seeing the original show and not putting in the hours to research and learn their character, or just bad directing/writing and those in charge trying to put their own twist on the characters which really messed with the flow of things.
But as a lot of these live action remakes go, it did not end up working for anyone I know who watched the original and was a fan. The story is all over the place like someone read the spark notes and tried to plug it all together. I understand taking 20 episodes and putting it into 8 is hard. But some things were just shoved together without even thinking. And it really effected character development. Some key moments were portrayed in a single scene, if that, instead of a majority of an episode to really let it sink in. And other random moments were added for characters that were not needed at all and almost hurt the story rather then help.
I’d be curious to see the opinion of those who never saw the original. Because knowing the original story made my head hurt watching this, and I just couldn’t wrap my head around what they were trying to do. So maybe a fresh mind would follow it better.
A lot of the reviews so far on google seem almost paid for the way they are copy pasted praising this interpretation all saying the same things, with somehow scraping together a 4.1/5 overall. Meanwhile the more meh ratings on rotten tomatoes (60%) and various fan pages and YouTube review channels being mostly negative seem a lot more realistic as I personally have heard a large majority of bad reviews from friends. So I would not be surprised to see a drastic drop in viewership if they even go through with a season 2.
