It was a cross between the best parts of Twilight, Thor, and Cruel Intentions. The setting was used as its own complicated character. The writing was layered, solidly acted, and believable--it did not fall into teen cheesy tropes. HOWEVER, the "human" adult characters fully embodied the one-dimensional blind cluelessness-to-reality that a high schooler would seem to imagine. It seemed unrealistic that every adult was a weak, fearful idiot interested only in snacks, hairstyles, and obeying the rules. Adults do understand technology. They may have even invented it. But aside from that, the primary action is on the interesting storyline which makes the series an entirely binge-worthy treat.
