I was not expecting the "stagey" aspect and it blew me away. It is the best stage to screen adaptation I have seen which is crazy since it hasn't been on the stage. So if someone doesn't take it from screen to stage it will be a great waste. It is visually stunning in places and the vocals were very good. I didn't think he looked much like Elton until the side by side photos at the very end and then I realized that I apparently have forgotten what young Elton John looked like as we have both gotten older. But the fact that there is an older Elton in all of our brains is something to be grateful for. That fact saves this film from being the usual story. There is more emotional depth than is typical for a musical biography. The color, music and humor save it from being too painful.
