Besides being based on and doing a great job representing a real battle, the movie also does a great job representing many issues facing grunts during the Vietnam War. Although I didn't personally go to Vietnam, I was a medic in the US Army (1971-74) spending two years in Ft. Bragg NC where I met and got to know soldiers who did do tours there. They shared their experiences, including their perception of the futility of the war which is shown in the film. No one film can examine all the issues associated with the Vietnam War, but I think this one is one of the best doing so.
