Forget the reviews about all the political non-sense. The original Candyman had plenty of that in it as well, sorry but if that’s your reason for blasting the movie then you probably didn’t watch the first movie or weren’t old enough to realize the same narrative existed before BLM and this stuff going on now.
This movie had a lot of potential and I enjoyed where they were going with the mythology of the character. The acting was superb. Unfortunately, there was one thing they failed to do and that was truly tie in the original Candyman to this movie. They talk about the events of the original, make references to it, but ultimately fail to satisfy that craving. They were so close, but missed the mark. The crazy thing is this story was perfect for them to do so! Maybe that’s why it falls even flatter knowing they could have really nailed it but chose not to. Shame.
All in all, it’s not terrible and is worth a watch but it leaves too much to be desired… especially for fans of the original movies.
The other big flaw of the movie is their choice of how they presented flashbacks and sequenced story telling. It felt cheap or overly minimalistic. It was a stark contrast to the rest of the movie and ruined the flow of it at times. Scenes that should have been very emotional were underwhelming and downright silly.
