The first half of this movie is overly glossy. It looks like a well acted B movie. The characters are barely believable but solid. It leads you to a mild sense of comfortable expectation. There is a feeling that there is something else...
The second half is astoundingly poignant, due to realising that the first half is meant to be glossy..because it's seen from the mind of a boy who is experiencing domestic trauma and grief.
This movie is well constructed and provides amazing insight without divulging too much too soon, but when it does it unfolds and refolds beautifully.
