The iconic original series Star Trek experience, feels truest to the nature of the series, more so than much of the show its self (oddly). There are a couple of other good movies in the original series line but this one really set the mark, if you watch only one TOS thing, watch this. Then go for the 6/undiscovered country. After that you're on your own (avoid the motion picture).

Sadly while quite a beautiful movie (esp for its time) with perhaps potential, the plot, characters, and everything is underdeveloped and barely strung together, the overall experience is quite tedious and boring at times, with no real payoff in the story line anywhere. Can't really ever recommend anyone to watch this, other than to provide an interesting discussion on the contrast this has with everything else ; as a stand alone movie for entertainment, it's not very entertaining.
