Cioran does for us now, in 2022, what we ought to do but cannot: think of finitude from all possible angles - especially regarding the kind of thinking that undergirds the aberrant promises and (secular) beliefs about the centrality of humanity in our self- and wrold-understanding. Of course, Cioran is lucid and extends the anti-utopian gestures of many at the time and prior (especially Nietzsche's) in ways that make his analysis even more accessible. But the likelihood is that only those who aready understand what is at stake will still read him, while those who really should could not even begin to comprehend the question he asks.
