My heart exploded, watching Mangrove by Steve McQueen. To see Trinidad's culture and history represented in a film so beautifully really touched me. There were subtle yet specific nuances in the film that showed the attention to historical, cultural elements like the picture of Paul Bogle on the wall after the police raid; and singing Jean & Dinah in the Mangrove together. Most importantly, Steve McQueen brought to light the involvement of Trinidadians in the Black Panther movement. In Lovers Rock, he captured the magic of Rebel Music incredibly. The scene where everyone jams to The Revolutionaries - Kunta Kinte Dub, sends a jolt through your veins while watching. This is a fascinating mini-series so far that really provides so much pride for the African Diaspora.
