This movie is breathtakingly beautiful and haunting at the same time. This is not a historical recount of Diana’s time with the royal family, but more so what it (probably) *felt* like for her. It masterfully depicts the notion that once you become part of the royal family you lose part of your free will/autonomy. You now belong to the monarchy and become “currency” (from the film). The best way to preface this film is that this is from Diana’s POV. The toll the royal family had on her anxiety, depression, eating disorder, etc. How the paparazzi treated her like anything but a human being. And what it felt like to finally escape. I think Kristen Stewart nailed Diana’s mannerisms, speech, and shyness. It would have been nice to have had more scenes with interactions between the royals and Diana, but it’s common knowledge at this point that they didn’t see eye to eye. The heart of this movie is in the mindset of Diana and the roller coaster her mental health took at the hands of the royals. Diana had a lot of love in her life from the people, but those closest to her, her “family”, and those swarming her with cameras showed nothing but ridicule and negativity.
I smell an Oscar for Kristen Stewart.
